TANGOVINO 2021 MALBEC PACHECO PASS

The Grape: Originally grown in France, Malbec is one of the noble grapes used in the renowned Bordeaux Blend. It is now grown in regions around the world though it has become best known as an Argentine varietal where it is extremely popular with many vineyards in the Mendoza area. In California, Malbec has traditionally been used as a blending grape in wines referred to as a Meritage. However, in recent years, many California wineries are producing single varietal wines from Malbec grapes. With the Tangovino inspiration coming from Argentine tango dance, it was natural for us to develop a Malbec wine.

The Vineyard: Tangovino 2021 Malbec is produced with grapes from a single vineyard in the Pacheco Pass AVA. Located in Santa Clara and San Benito Counties, Pacheco Pass runs between US101 on the West and Interstate 5 on the East along State Route 152. It is a sub-AVA of the San Francisco Bay AVA. The climate is transitional with the eastern end having hot and cold swings, and the western end of the Pass more moderate with a coastal influence. Due to its elevation this wine region can be very windy. Pacheco Pass is quite beautiful and can be found extensively in the writings of John Muir.

Cellaring: Our 2021 Malbec was aged in French oak, 20% new, for 12 months.

Tasting Notes: This rich ruby wine generates beautiful dark fruit aromas including prunes, figs, blueberries, and cherries. The tannins are solid but not overpowering making this vintage drinkable now or able to age for five to ten years. The finish is long, with pleasantly intense fruit.

Food Pairing: As with many relatively robust red wines, this Malbec pairs well with grilled or braised red meats, pasta dishes with marinara sauces, rich cheeses, and dark chocolates.

Label Art: Born from a love of Argentine Tango, we continue our tradition of partnering with artists and photographers who produce works featuring the intense passion of this dance. The 2021 Tangovino Malbec features a photograph of world-renowned tango dancers, Alejandro Barrientos and his late wife and dance partner, Rosalia Gasso, by Los Angeles photographer, Laura V. Mingo.
